Design Cuts Secretly Shuts Down Without Telling Anyone
The design community is reeling from the unexpected shutdown of Design Cuts, a popular platform for designers seeking high-quality resources. As someone who has relied on Design Cuts for years, I want to share my thoughts on this shocking development and what it means for all of us in the design industry.
🚨 Design Cuts Closed Without Warning
When I logged into Design Cuts today to download one of my previous purchases, I was redirected to Creative Market's website. At first, I thought I had made a typo, but then I saw the message: "We shut our doors down two days ago." I was stunned. Not a single person received any prior notification about this shutdown. It felt like they tried to quietly vanish without informing their loyal customers.

The only indication of their closure seemed to be the message on Creative Market's site. Why didn't they send out an email or a notification before this happened? It’s frustrating because many of us likely haven't downloaded our assets recently. After years of purchases, I never thought I would lose access to them without warning.
Interestingly, I can't shake the feeling that this was part of a bigger plan. I suspect that as part of the acquisition deal with Creative Market, they may have agreed not to provide downloads or notify customers. Many assets that were available on Design Cuts can also be found on Creative Market, but at a higher price. It seems clear that they want us to repurchase the items we already bought, but at a premium.
💔 What’s Gone and How to Get It Back?
When I looked into the situation further, I realized that all of our downloads are completely gone. If you check Creative Market's FAQ section, it’s filled with questions about how their licensing works. However, the only thing on my mind is how to retrieve what I had already purchased from Design Cuts.

As I scrolled through my emails, I found a purchase I made just a month ago for $71 worth of digital assets. Now, that money feels wasted. Since I didn’t download them in time, I have no way of retrieving my funds or the assets. What’s worse is that Design Cuts continued to send marketing emails up until their closure, suggesting everything was fine. This unprofessional behavior is not just disappointing; it’s downright rude.
📉 The Aftermath: Protecting Yourself Moving Forward
This situation serves as a wake-up call for all of us. Here are my top three takeaways to protect yourself in the future:
Download Everything Immediately: As soon as you make a purchase, download the files to your hard drive or an external drive. Relying on cloud storage isn't enough anymore.
Don’t Prepay for Services: I will never again prepay for a service for an entire year. Memberships should be month-to-month to ensure you’re not left in the lurch if a company shuts down.
Track Your Purchases: I recommend using a tracking tool, like ClickUp, to monitor all your purchases. Keep track of when memberships are due and what you're paying for.

👥 Community Support: Sharing Assets and Ideas
I'm sure many of you are feeling the same frustration. If you have any thoughts or suggestions on how we can retrieve our lost assets, let’s collaborate! Maybe we can share what we have or find a workaround to help each other out. The design community is strong, and we can support one another during this challenging time.
Despite this setback, I hope everyone is having a good day. Remember, we can still stay connected and share our experiences. Let’s talk about how we can prevent this from happening in the future and support each other through this transition. Your thoughts and feedback are invaluable.
