IndesignTutorial How To Use The Type Tool To Write Text on a Path - Text On A Circle

Creating Text on a Circle in Adobe InDesign: A Step-by-Step Guide

In this tutorial, we will explore how to effectively use the Type Tool in Adobe InDesign to create text that follows the curve of a circle. This skill is particularly useful for designing logos, banners, or any other graphic that requires text to be placed in a circular format. Let’s dive in and learn how to make your text pop on a circular path!

Step 1: Create a New Document 📄

The first thing you need to do is set up your workspace. To begin, open Adobe InDesign and create a new document. Choose the standard size of 8.5 by 11 inches, which is a common format for many projects. Since this is a tutorial, you won't need multiple pages, so one will suffice.

When setting up your document, you can choose to ignore the margins for now as they won’t affect the design of the circle. Simply click “Create” to get started.

Step 2: Draw a Path 🔄

With your new document open, it’s time to draw the path that your text will follow. In this case, we will be drawing circles. To do this, select the Ellipse Tool from the toolbar. If you notice that the Rectangle Tool is selected by default, you can right-click on it to open a dropdown menu and choose the Ellipse Tool instead.

Hold down the Shift key while dragging your mouse to create a perfect circle. This ensures that the circle remains proportionate. To make the path visible, assign a color to it. For the top circle, let’s choose pink.

Step 3: Duplicate the Circle 🔁

Next, you’ll want to create a second circle for the text on the bottom. To duplicate the first circle, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste it. Move the duplicated circle to the bottom of the original circle and change its color to blue for differentiation.

Step 4: Use the Type on a Path Tool ✍️

Now that you have your circles set up, it’s time to add text. Select the Type on a Path Tool by right-clicking on the Type Tool in the toolbar. This tool allows you to type along the path you’ve created.

Click on the top circle where you want the text to appear. You should see a blinking cursor indicating that you can start typing. Let’s type “Text on the Top of the Circle.”

Step 5: Customize the Text 🎨

After typing your text, it’s essential to customize its appearance. You can change the font to something more visually appealing, like Open Sans. Adjust the size, color, and alignment to fit your design. For this example, let’s make the text pink to match the top circle.

If the text doesn’t sit where you want it, you can click and drag it along the path. The cursor will change to a double arrow when you’re in the right position to adjust the text.

Step 6: Adjust Baseline Options 📏

If you want to change how the text is positioned relative to the path, you can access the Type on a Path Options. Go to the menu bar, select Type, then Type on a Path, and choose Options. Here, you can change the baseline options to adjust how the text appears on the circle.

You can set the text to be on the ascender, centered, or on the baseline. This is particularly useful if you want to create a more polished look or if the circle is invisible and serves as a guide for your text.

Step 7: Add Text to the Bottom Circle 🔤

Now, repeat the process for the bottom circle. Select the Type on a Path Tool again and click on the bottom circle. Type “Text on the Bottom of the Circle.”

Change the font and size to match the top text. For this example, let’s keep it consistent with Open Sans and set the color to blue.

Step 8: Flip the Bottom Text 🔄

To ensure that the text on the bottom circle is oriented correctly, you will need to flip it. Go back to the Type on a Path Options menu, and this time, click the “Flip” button. This will invert the text so that it reads correctly along the bottom path.

Step 9: Center the Text 🧭

With the text flipped, you might want to center it within the circle. Similar to the top text, click and drag the text until it is positioned to your liking. Use the double arrow cursor to assist you in centering it properly.

Step 10: Final Adjustments and Visibility 👀

Finally, review your design. If you want the circles to be invisible but keep the text visible, select the circles and change their stroke to none. This will give you the effect of text floating on the path without the distraction of the circles themselves.

Make any final adjustments to the text size, font, and positioning to ensure everything looks just right. Your design is now complete!

Conclusion 🎉

You have successfully learned how to create text on a path in Adobe InDesign! This technique is not only useful for logos but can also enhance various design projects. Remember to experiment with different shapes and text styles to find what works best for your specific needs.

Keep practicing, and don’t hesitate to explore other features in Adobe InDesign to expand your design skills. Happy designing!
