New InDesign 2023 Changes

Exploring the New InDesign 2023 Features

Step 1: Copy and Paste Between Adobe Programs ✂️

The first feature introduced in InDesign 2023 is the ability to copy and paste content between different Adobe programs. This is a significant enhancement aimed at improving workflow efficiency.

To use this feature, you simply copy elements in InDesign and paste them into Photoshop or vice versa. For example, copying a vector graphic from InDesign and pasting it into Photoshop should be straightforward. However, there are some limitations to be aware of.

When pasting from InDesign to Photoshop, the content appears as a vector smart object, which is not editable directly in Photoshop. To edit, it opens Adobe Illustrator, even if the original creation was not in Illustrator. This limitation can be frustrating for users expecting seamless integration.

While this feature works well between Illustrator and Photoshop, it struggles with other combinations. For example, copying multiple layers from Photoshop to InDesign results in only one layer being pasted. This limitation means you can only transfer one item at a time from Photoshop to InDesign, which is less than ideal.

Step 2: Preview File Pages from File Finder 🗂️

The second new feature in InDesign 2023 is the ability to preview file pages directly from your file finder menu. This feature aims to make it easier to browse and identify InDesign files without opening them.

To activate this feature, go to InDesign's preferences, navigate to file handling, and ensure that "Always save preview images with documents" is checked. You can then choose to save previews of all pages and adjust the preview size.

Despite these settings, some users may find that the preview functionality does not always work as expected. Even after saving the file with these settings, the preview buttons may not appear. This inconsistency can be frustrating for users relying on this feature.

Step 3: Duplicate Spreads Efficiently 📄

Duplicating spreads in InDesign has been made more efficient with the 2023 update. Previously, duplicating a spread would automatically place it at the end of the document, which was inconvenient for many users.

Now, when you duplicate a spread, it is placed immediately after the original, maintaining the document's structure. This change makes it easier to manage and organize your spreads without having to move them manually.

For instance, if you duplicate pages 26 and 27, the new duplicates will appear as pages 28 and 29, directly following the original pages. This improvement is a welcome change for those who frequently need to duplicate spreads within their documents.

Step 4: Utilize Style Packs 🎨

The final new feature in InDesign 2023 is the introduction of style packs. Style packs are predefined sets of styles that can be applied to your documents, similar to how style templates work in web design platforms like Squarespace.

To access style packs, go to the window menu, select styles, and choose style packs. You'll find a variety of predefined styles that can be applied to your text and elements. These style packs include settings for headings, subheads, paragraphs, lists, and ordered lists.

Using style packs can save you time and ensure consistency across your documents. For example, you can apply a predefined heading style to your text with a single click, rather than manually adjusting the font, size, and color each time.

You can also create your own style packs, customizing them to fit your specific needs. This feature is particularly useful for those creating planners or other documents that require consistent styling throughout.

Conclusion 🎉

The InDesign 2023 update introduces several new features designed to enhance your workflow and improve document management. While some of these features, like copy and paste between programs, have limitations, others, like duplicating spreads and utilizing style packs, offer significant improvements.

Whether you're a seasoned InDesign user or just getting started, these new features provide valuable tools to streamline your design process. Experiment with them to see how they can benefit your projects, and stay tuned for future updates and enhancements.
