Tutorial: Creating Clickable Digital Planner Tabs in Adobe InDesign
In the world of digital planning, having clickable tabs can significantly enhance the user experience. This tutorial will guide you through the process of creating a single digital planner tab using Adobe InDesign, ensuring it is linkable and functional for use in applications like GoodNotes. Let’s dive into the steps!
Step 1: Setting Up Your Workspace 🖥️
Before you start creating your digital planner tab, it’s essential to set up your workspace in Adobe InDesign. This will make the design process smoother and more efficient.
Open Adobe InDesign on your computer.
Select “Window” from the top menu, then choose “Workspace.”
Choose “Essentials” as your workspace layout. This is typically the default and provides a clean interface.
With your workspace set, you are ready to begin designing your tab.
Step 2: Open Your Digital Planner File 📂
Next, you need to open your digital planner file within Adobe InDesign. If you don’t have a planner to work on, you can create one from scratch, or use a template available for purchase or download.
Go to “File” in the top menu and select “Open.”
Navigate to your digital planner file and open it.
If you wish to follow along with a specific planner, consider purchasing the “Pretty in Pink” planner available in the Pretty Fabulous Designs shop.
Now that your planner is open, let’s move on to creating the tab.
Step 3: Creating the Tab Rectangle 📏
To create a tab, you’ll be using the rectangle tool. This will form the base of your clickable tab.
Select the “Rectangle Tool” from the toolbar on the left side of the screen.
Click and drag to draw a rectangle on the left side of your planner page where you want your tab to be.
Adjust the rectangle’s dimensions as needed by using the arrow keys or by clicking and dragging the corners.
Once the rectangle is drawn, it’s time to style it.
Step 4: Styling Your Tab 🎨
Styling your tab is crucial for it to be visually appealing and fit within your planner's aesthetic. Here’s how to do it:
With the rectangle selected, go to the “Swatches” panel and set the fill color to white.
Remove any stroke or border by selecting “None” in the stroke panel.
To create rounded corners, navigate to the “Corners” section and adjust the corner radius to your preference.
After styling, your tab should look like a clean, rounded rectangle. Now, let’s add some text to it!
Step 5: Adding Text to Your Tab ✍️
Text is essential for identifying the purpose of the tab. Follow these steps to add text:
Select the “Type Tool” from the toolbar.
Click and drag to create a text box within your tab rectangle.
Type the word “Home” or whatever label you prefer for your tab.
Adjust the font size, style, and alignment to ensure it fits nicely within the tab.
Your tab is now visually complete! Next, we need to make it functional.
Step 6: Creating a Hyperlink for Your Tab 🔗
To make your tab clickable, you will need to create a hyperlink that directs users to a specific page in your planner. Here’s how to do it:
With the tab selected, right-click and choose “Hyperlink” from the context menu.
Select “New Hyperlink” from the submenu.
In the hyperlink options, choose to link to a page rather than a URL.
Set the destination page to the first page of your planner (usually Page 1).
Your tab is now set to direct users back to the home page of your planner when clicked.
Step 7: Saving and Testing Your Tab 💾
After creating your tab and linking it, it’s time to save your work and test the functionality.
Go to “File” and select “Export.”
Name your file (e.g., “Planner Tab Tutorial”) and choose the location to save it.
Select “Adobe PDF” as the format and click “Save.”
In the export settings, ensure you select the right options for your planner needs and then click “Export.”
Once exported, the file should automatically open in Adobe Acrobat. Click on your newly created tab to test the hyperlink functionality. If it directs you to the home page, congratulations! You’ve successfully created a clickable tab.
Step 8: Duplicating the Tab for Other Pages 📄
Now that you’ve created one functional tab, you may want to add this tab to other pages in your planner.
Copy the tab you created by selecting it and using the “Edit” menu to copy and paste it on other pages.
Make sure to adjust the hyperlinks accordingly if you want them to link to different pages.
For a more efficient process, consider using Master Pages for consistent tab placement across your planner.
If you’re unfamiliar with Master Pages, there are additional resources available to help you learn this feature, which can save you time in the long run.
Step 9: Final Touches and Exporting Your Planner 📦
Before finalizing your planner, take a moment to review all tabs and ensure they function correctly. Once satisfied, you can prepare your planner for distribution or personal use.
Make any necessary adjustments to the layout, design, or functionality of your tabs.
Follow the same export process to save the final version of your planner.
If you plan to sell your planner, consider testing it on your iPad or tablet to ensure everything works as expected.
Conclusion: Your Digital Planner is Ready! 🎉
Creating clickable tabs in your digital planner using Adobe InDesign is a straightforward process that enhances usability. With these steps, you can design an engaging and functional planner that users will love. Remember, practice makes perfect, and you can always refine your design skills as you create more planners.
