TUTORIAL How to create lined pages in Adobe InDesign + dot grid pages + graph paper

How to Create Lined, Dot Grid, and Graph Paper Pages in Adobe InDesign

Step 1: Open the Pages Panel 📄

To begin, open Adobe InDesign and navigate to the Pages Panel. This panel is crucial for managing and organizing the pages in your document.

If you don't see the Pages Panel, go to Window in the top menu and ensure there is a checkmark next to Pages. This will open the panel on the right side of your workspace.

Hover over the double arrow between the Parent Pages at the top and the actual pages of your document at the bottom. Adjust the space as needed to leave room for your Parent Pages.

Step 2: Add Parent Pages 📝

Parent Pages in InDesign work similarly to headers and footers in Microsoft Word. They repeat on each page they are applied to, making it easy to maintain consistency.

Right-click in the Parent Pages area and select Duplicate Spread three times to create three new Parent Pages. Rename them to "Lined," "Dot Grid," and "Graph Paper" for ease of identification.

  • Right-click each page

  • Select Parent Options

  • Rename accordingly

Step 3: Create Lined Pages 📚

For lined pages, open the Paragraph Styles panel by going to Window > Styles > Paragraph Styles. Click the plus sign to create a new style.

Double-click the new style and name it "Lined Pages." In the Basic Character Formats section, set the font size to 12 and the leading to 20.

In the Paragraph Rules section, ensure there is a checkmark next to Rule On. Set the rule type to a solid line and the color to black.

Use the Type Tool to create a text box that spans the width of your page. Hit the return key repeatedly to create lines. Adjust the leading in the Paragraph Styles panel if needed to achieve the desired spacing.

Step 4: Create Dot Grid Pages ⚫

For dot grid pages, select the Circle Tool and create a small circle (0.01 inches). Change the color to black.

With the circle selected, go to Edit > Step and Repeat. Set the number of rows to 47 and columns to 35, and ensure Create as a Grid is selected. Click OK to generate the grid.

Group the dots by right-clicking and selecting Group. Use the Selection Tool to position and resize the grid to fill the page.

Step 5: Create Graph Paper 📏

For graph paper, go to Table > Create Table. Set the number of rows to 47 and columns to 36. Leave the headers and footers blank.

Drag and drop the loaded cursor to create the table. To lighten the lines, select all cells, go to the color settings, and reduce the tint to 21%.

Copy and paste the table to create a second page, aligning it with the first for consistency.

Step 6: Add Multiple Pages with One Click 🔄

Now that your Parent Pages are set up, you can easily add multiple pages to your document. Right-click on the last page and select Insert Pages.

Specify the number of pages you want to add and choose the appropriate Parent Page (Lined, Dot Grid, or Graph Paper). Click OK to add the pages.

Repeat this process for each type of page you want to include, adjusting the Parent Page selection as needed.

Conclusion 🎉

By following these steps, you can create lined, dot grid, and graph paper pages in Adobe InDesign. Using Parent Pages and the Insert Pages function, you can efficiently add multiple pages to your document with ease.

Whether you're designing a planner, a notebook, or any other type of document, these techniques will help you maintain consistency and save time. Happy designing!
